Medical Breakthrough At MUSC Has Amazing Healing Powers

By Marika Kelderman, Jan. 31, 2008 (Live 5 News)- Call it a super neosporin of sorts. A simple gel with the power to regenerate healthy skin and prevent scar tissue.

Developed by Dr. Gautam Ghatnekar of MUSC and First String Research the gel works by telling the body to stop producing scar tissue which is its normal defense to a cut or wound.

"What that does is it gives the body enough time for the good cells to come back and then fill up the wound site," said Dr. Ghatnekar...

Scientists Map Signaling Networks That Control Neuron Function

Feb. 4, 2008 (ScienceDaily)- In the first large-scale proteomics study of its kind, researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine have mapped thousands of neuronal proteins to discover how they connect into complex signaling networks that guide neuron function. Their research -- using quantitative mass spectrometry, computational software and bioinformatics to match the proteins to their cellular functions -- may lead to a better understanding of brain development, neurodegenerative diseases, and spinal cord regeneration...

Spinal cord stem cell hope

Jan. 31, 2008 (Herald Sun)- SPINAL cord injury sufferers have been given fresh hope of improved movement with the first Australian trial of a new adult stem cell treatment.

The trial will be conducted at a new dedicated spinal cord laboratory at Melbourne's St Vincent's Hospital, the first of its kind in Australia to co-ordinate national and international research and apply it to patients...

Spinal cord research moving forward in 2008: The Miami Project is awaiting approval on use of Schwann cells

By Ryan Watzel, Jan. 24, 2008 (The Miami Hurricane)- Since its co-founding in 1985 by Dr. Barth A. Green and three families affected by spinal-cord injuries, The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the Miller School of Medicine has enjoyed a legacy of scientific and social developments.

In 2004, the Miami Project published a breakthrough article regarding dramatic improvement in animal models of spinal-cord injury, utilizing a combination of cells and drugs...

Scientists Restore Walking In Mice After Spinal Cord Injury

Jan. 7, 2008 (ScienceDaily)- Spinal cord damage blocks the routes that the brain uses to send messages to the nerve cells that control walking. Until now, doctors believed that the only way for injured patients to walk again was to re-grow the long nerve highways that link the brain and base of the spinal cord. For the first time, a UCLA study shows that the central nervous system can reorganize itself and follow new pathways to restore the cellular communication required for movement...
